    Overview

When using the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) assertion consumer service, users see the error "Please make sure there is a valid nameid or the user exists in the datastore."

    Cause

There can be several causes for this error. Open the Audit log for the affected realm and look for a SAML Assertion Failed entry — the specific reason is included there. One common cause is clock skew between the Identity Platform (IdP) and Service Provider (SP) servers, which the Audit log states directly, as shown below.

Audit log entry showing a SAML Assertion Failed error caused by clock skew between the IdP and SP servers.

    To resolve this:

    1. Check the clock skew between the IdP and SP servers.
    2. Correct the time on the servers so they match.
    3. Configure both servers to use Network Time Protocol (NTP) to keep their clocks in sync going forward, to avoid this recurring.
